Visits To France #1 Art and
Photography Students in February
1999
For a variety of reasons, not
entirely logical, I had always resisted going on residential
educational visits. But in 1998 my study of French at school. coupled
with a superb holiday in the Dordogne had built up a desire to go to
France. So when I was invited to go to Paris with students I couldn't
resist.
And I had a truly wonderful three days. We left London on a February
Friday night at half-term at around 10 p.m. (by coach) and travelled on
the midnight ferry to Calais and then on down to Paris. I didn't sleep
because of sheer childlike excitment...and can remember our arrival at
Paris in the very early hours and the coach driving going round the
Periphique just to waste time.
We started our visit in Montmartre at the Sacre Coeur, moved on to the
Place du Tertre and then, after lunch to the Picasso Museum. that
evening I ate cous-cous for the first time!
Sunday was spent first at Versailles, then at the Musee d'Orsay and
finally at the Eiffel Tower. I remember running down the fire escape
staircase as fast as I could just for the hell of it! I didn't trip
either...
Finally Monday, our last day, was spent on a guided tour with a
most attractive French guide...
And so back to England.
